Reunion

2009 saw the first official reunion of past members and friends of Mount Sion Silver Band. The reunion took place in Waterford City on the October Bank Holiday weekend (23-25 October 2009) and took the form of a historical, social and musical celebration of the band. The official itinerary for the reunion weekend was as follows:

The weekend commenced with an exhibition of photographs and band memorabilia in the foyer of Edmund Rice Chapel, Mount Sion. The exhibition opened on Friday, 23rd October and remain on public display (with free admission) throughout the weekend.

There was also an informal social gathering at Downes Bar, Thomas Street on the Friday evening from 8pm, which was attended by Alan Fitzpatrick, Brien O’Sullivan, Gavin Roche, James Mernin, John Hanlon, John Mernin, Mark Fitzgerald, Micheal Long and Niall O’Connor.

A comprehensive history of the band in book format was created especially for the 2009 reunion by John Mernin. The book is entitled “Mount Sion Silver Band – A History in Music: 1967-2001” and is full of interesting information about the band. It was officially launched along with the photography exhibition by Br. Seán Ó Dugáin (founder of the band in 1967) at Edmund Rice Chapel, Mount Sion on Saturday at 12pm, and was available for sale at all reunion events thereafter, priced at €10. The book is currently sold out.

The main event of the weekend took the form of a sit-down meal at Day’s Hotel, The  Bridge, Waterford. This was attended by 47 people in total, including:

A special Mass celebrating the history of the band took place in Edmund Rice Chapel, Mount Sion at 2:30pm on Sunday afternoon. The Mass was celebrated by Fr. Martin Keogh (a past pupil from Mount Sion) and music was provided by the reunion band, conducted by Liam Walsh and comprising the following ex-members:
